During the holiday season (Christmas, New Year’s Day, Epiphany or St. John’s Day) we must be extremely careful with our dogs. They are auditory delicate animals and pyrotechnics can alter and scare them.
The use of fireworks and firecrackers is prohibited in many areas but not in others, so we recommend the following tips to help your furry friend in the days to come:
- Take your dog for a walk during quiet hours of the day, usually in the early hours and when there is not much partying going on.
- Always take him out for a walk on a leash, it will prevent him from running away or if he gets upset with a firecracker you will be able to control him.
- When the first sounds of pyrotechnics or loud music start, prepare your house: close the doors, close the windows and lower the blinds. Do everything possible to reduce the sound coming from outside.
- Turning on the radio and playing quiet music is a good way to hide the sound from outside and maintain a peaceful environment.
- Distract your dog with toys, smells or long-lasting snacks (Example: GESPETFOOD bones or knuckles).
- Make a space inside the house that belongs to the dog, if he is afraid he knows he can hide. Put blankets, toys and pillows. His own fort as when you were a child.
- You must as a human be calm and transmit it and if your furry friend asks for contact, give it to him.
- Avoid locking him up or tying him inside small places so as not to create more anxiety.
- Do not leave your dog alone at any time, always be available for them.
- In the most severe cases of dogs with fears to the noise of rockets, the best thing to do is to call your veterinarian and have him recommend a tranquilizing medication.
