It is the time of the year with the grayest skies and the rainiest days.
The mood to go for a walk is lower, but your dog still needs his routine and daily exercise. We must not stop taking care of his health even when the weather affects us. It is important that he continues to enjoy his leisure time.
For this reason, the GESPETFOOD veterinary team brings some recommendations for your furry friend:
- If he doesn’t want to go for a walk, don’t force him to. Physical activity and socializing should be a positive moment for your dog. By forcing them you could create a fear or phobia of the rain.
- Plan the route where they will go, so as to go through places with little traffic, without people or cars. This way he will receive stimuli only from nature and the weather, he will not be overwhelmed with more.
- Bring equipment for your dog will be the best thing, wrap him up if necessary, put shoes if he doesn’t like to get his paws wet or a reflective collar if you go to a crowded place. If you go to a farther place you can take with you a towel or a blanket to dry him if the weather got worse.
- Drying him is very important. When you get home, dry him very well with a towel to avoid diseases and the proliferation of fungus or bacteria that can cause a skin disease. You should pay special attention to the areas of the ears, armpits and pads, which is where moisture can accumulate the most.
As a last piece of advice, never leave a dog alone outdoors. The risk of him getting lost, escaping or having an accident is very high. Their nerves are more on edge than usual and this can be a bad experience. The walk is a moment to share and have a good time so, at the end of the walk, reward your dog’s good behavior with a cuddle and treats session.
We hope it works for you and your furry friends manage to come out of these rains undefeated and healthy. If you want to contact the GESPETFOOD veterinary team, write us at info@gespetfood.com and follow us on our social networks for more tips.
