Is it dangerous to take your dog out in summer? Key tips to protect them from the heat

Discover how to care for your dog in summer, prevent heatstroke and keep their paws safe from hot asphalt. Avoid unnecessary risks!

Is it dangerous to take your dog out in summer? Yes, much more than you might think. Excessive heat, hot asphalt and dehydration can put your pet’s health at risk. Here’s how to take care of your dog in summer and keep them happy and healthy during the hottest months of the year.

  1. Avoid walks during the hottest hours of the day
The best times for walks are early in the morning or at sunset. Between 12 noon and 6 p.m., temperatures can exceed 30 °C, and the pavement can reach 50 °C.

🧪 TIP: Do the 5-second test on the ground with your hand. If it burns you, it burns them.

  1. Hydrate them frequently
Always carry fresh water with you. Dogs don’t sweat like humans, so they dehydrate more quickly. Add natural hydrating or protein-rich snacks as a reward.
  2. Beware of heatstroke
Symptoms such as excessive panting, weakness or vomiting may indicate heatstroke. Do not wait: move them into the shade, wet them with water (not cold) and contact your vet.
  3. Protect their paws
Hot asphalt can cause severe burns. Use booties or walk in shaded areas and on grass whenever possible.
